Walsh Secures Sewer, Flood Mitigation Grants
9/18/2018
HARRISBURG – Rep. Justin Walsh (R-Westmoreland) today announced more than $700,000 in state grants have been awarded to the Rostraver Township Sewage Authority and the city of Jeannette.

Walsh advocated for the funding through the state’s Commonwealth Financing Authority. Rostraver’s funding is coming from the Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program, which offers grants for small water and sewer infrastructure projects and can be used to assist with the construction, improvement, expansion, or rehabilitation or repair of a water supply or sanitary sewer system. The city of Jeannette’s grant is from the Flood Mitigation Program, which offers grants for statewide initiatives to assist with flood mitigation projects and can be used for land acquisition; construction, repair or rehabilitation of flood control projects; engineering; inspections; and permits.

“The very wet summer we have experienced this year has brought flooding and sewage overflow issues to the forefront,” Walsh said. “Both of these grants are good first steps to making a difference in our community. I pledge to continue to find ways to alleviate flooding.”

The $300,000 Rostraver grant will allow for the rehabilitation of sanitary sewer lines in the Collingate Sewer System. This portion of the system has led to basement flooding and sanitary sewer backups. The project will eliminate unwanted inflow and infiltration from entering the sanitary sewer system and reduce the potential for sewage backups and manhole flooding.

The $418,000 city of Jeannette’s grant will improve drainage conditions in Brush Creek by removing trees and brush along the levee and channels, as well as gravel bars in the creek. In addition, a low-level dam will be removed that previously supplied the Omnova plant with water for its manufacturing process.

The 58th Legislative District in Westmoreland County includes Jeannette and Monessen cities, as well as East Huntingdon (part), Hempfield (part), Rostraver, Sewickley and South Huntingdon townships. Also, the district encompasses the boroughs of Adamsburg, Arona, Madison, Mount Pleasant, North Belle Vernon, Penn, Smithton, Sutersville and West Newton.
